Supernova Discovered in REQUIEM Survey to Reappear in 2037
We report the discovery of a Type 1a supernova (aka, a type of supernova that occurs in binary systems when one star is a white dwarf) within the REQUIEM galaxy MRG-M0138; the publication appears in today’s edition of Nature Astronomy.
While the supernova was present in the earlier 2016 epoch data, it faded away when we added data to the Hubble archive through our project. Careful lens model predictions forecast a return for Supernova Requiem in the year 2037 (or thereabouts within 2 years). Requiem marks a rare discovery by virtue of the nature of this source: both strong gravitationally lensed and and a Type 1a standard candle.
More information about Supernova Requiem can be found via the Space Telescope Science Institute press release or through our survey webpage. The original paper can be found here.
